Nomad Games enters publishing arena with first two signings

LYMM, CHESHIRE, OCTOBER 12th 2015: Nomad Games has signed its first third party titles – just a few weeks after announcing its plans to expand its business to offer publishing services to small studios.

The Cheshire-based company, best known for its million unit-selling Games Workshop franchise Talisman, will publish the first Backgammon title on Steam, along with a fun Christmas-themed solitaire game.

The deals come just a few weeks after Nomad Games revealed its intentions to reposition its business. The company will continue to develop first party titles in the table-top gaming category, but is also looking to attract other niche developers to its portfolio.

Backgammon Blitz from VooFoo Studios is the first in Nomad Games’ new third-party publishing division. The game has already enjoyed success on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and Nomad will release the title on Steam next month – the first Backgammon game on the platform.

Mark Williams, Technology Director at VooFoo Studios offered: “Both studios have a rich heritage with board and table-top games and we are delighted to be working together on the Steam release of Backgammon Blitz. Our commitment to developing visually stunning games, combined with Nomad’s deep understanding of the PC games market, makes them the perfect partner for this first-of-its-kind game on Steam.”

Meanwhile, Lapland Solitaire sees the company move into the casual gaming sector for the first time. The festive-themed title from developer Lemon Moose is available on Steam and is pitched at families, particularly as a fun, educational counting aid for young children.

“We revealed our ambitions to move into the publishing space during the summer and we’re delighted to have signed our first third-party titles already,” said Don Whitehead, Managing Director of Nomad Games.

“We’re taking small steps, but we have two new great titles now in our portfolio. Backgammon is seeing a huge resurgence in popularity, with celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire and even Kylie Minogue now big fans of the game.

“And our Solitaire Lapland release is perfectly timed to take advantage of the Christmas season.

“Nomad Games will remain focussed on the table-top genre, and we continue to look for new properties and third party titles in this sector. We also have some exciting first-party announcements coming soon, so watch this space…”

Nomad Games: The lines between traditional toys & video games are blurring - and it's good news for both sectors

NORTHAMPTON, UK, TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND 2015: Cheshire-based PC and mobile games specialist Nomad Games has outlined the ‘three ages’ of digital integration between toy brands and video games.

Speaking at the Inventors Workshop, Nomad Games managing director Don Whiteford asserted that while there are plenty of examples of toy brands moving into the digital medium, new collaborations between forward-thinking businesses in both sectors is creating lucrative new commercial opportunities.

Whiteford revealed that this new collaboration between the two markets has evolved via three ages of integration, namely:-

Branded Playtime – Where video games are based on the toy IP (intellectual property) and create a new experience or portrayal; e.g. Hotwheels, Action Man, Bratz, Transformers and Lego themed adventures. This has been happening for a very long time.

Crossover Playtime – Where a physical product has a digital equivalent that essentially does the same thing; e.g. LEGO and Minecraft. This is a more recent development and is particularly obvious in the category of board, card and dice games, where the portability of mobile devices has stimulated the genre.

Augmented Playtime – Where a technology toy and a video game work together; e.g. Ammibo and Skylanders. This is an emerging development and is typified by physical characters being used as ‘keys’ to unlock experiences in video games.

“From a toy-maker’s perspective, crossover and augmented playtime are the most fertile areas for creativity,” said Whiteford. “In both cases the physical and virtual play value can exist independently, but when brought together can create a new experience. With crossover products we have anecdotal evidence that a digital version of a game boosts sales of the physical equivalent.”

Nomad Games is an independent video games developer and publisher. It has enjoyed huge success with the PC and mobile versions of classic Games Workshop board game Talisman, turning it into a million-selling franchise.

The Cheshire-based company is now looking to extend its portfolio by taking other card and board games to digital formats through licensing agreements with both established brands and board game inventors.

This year’s Inventors Workshop was held at Whittlebury Hall in Northampton, UK, on Tuesday, September 22nd 2015.

The Shamen raises £5k for SpecialEffect charity

CHESHIRE, UK, THURSDAY JULY 23 2015: Cheshire-based PC and mobile games specialist Nomad Games has raised over £5,000 for SpecialEffect, the charity which helps people with physical disabilities enjoy games, thanks to a special collaboration between the two on the million-unit selling fantasy adventure roleplaying game Talisman.

Nomad Games launched a competition in December asking Talisman players and fans to design the next character for the Talisman board. Over 200 entries were received and they were shortlisted to a final six – Dragon, Shaman, Ranger, High Priestess, Faun and Orator. Those six were then put to a public vote. Some 1,566 votes were cast, and the Shaman, designed by Graham Zaretsky from the US, took the majority (40 per cent) of the votes.

Nomad Games handed the design over to SpecialEffect to ask some of the people they support to come up with artwork to use as inspiration to create the brand new character. A selection of sketches, collages and photo compositions were submitted by three designers - Amandeep Singh, Ben Clark, & Garath Garrett. These were used to design the final character.

Nomad Games released The Shaman character for the game just last month, with net proceeds from the downloadable content (DLC) going to SpecialEffect. And in just three weeks, fans of the PC and mobile game have raised over £5,000 for the charity.

That £5,000 equates to 6,500 Shamans sold, with 1,000 of those being downloaded within the first 12 hours of the character being on sale. The Shamen is now on its way to being the most successful character for Talisman to date.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of the Talisman community,” said Nomad Games’ Managing Director Don Whiteford. “To raise over £5,000 in just three weeks is a fantastic achievement; more than we had hoped for. And, of course, the total will keep rising as more of our players discover The Shaman character.

“However, this initiative was about more than raising money; it was a collaborative effort, combining the enthusiasm of the Talisman community with the talent of the artists supported by SpecialEffect who brought The Shamen to life. And, of course, further raising awareness of this very special charity, which is important to us, too.”

Barry Floyd, Operations Co-Ordinator at SpecialEffect, added: “We are so grateful to Nomad Games and the Talisman community for the money raised for SpecialEffect from sales of the Shaman character pack.

“The income will help keep our team of Occupational Therapists and technology specialists on the road and helping more people with disabilities to enjoy the fun and inclusivity that video games bring.

“The Shaman character has been developed through cooperation between Nomad Games, the Talisman community and people helped by SpecialEffect. It’s a perfect collaboration and we very much hope other games developers will follow Nomad Games’ lead.”

The Shaman DLC is available to download for £1.49, with fans of the PC sku given the opportunity to choose what they pay.

The Shaman joins Talisman, raises money for SpecialEffect

LYMM, CHESHIRE, UK, MONDAY JUNE 8TH 2015: A new character for the million-unit selling Talisman PC and mobile game will be launched on June 10th thanks to a fantastic collaboration between Nomad Games and SpecialEffect, the charity which helps people with physical disabilities enjoy games.

The new Shaman character will be available as DLC from this week and is the result of a competition which Nomad Games launched earlier this year in conjunction with SpecialEffect. Fans of Talisman were invited to submit ideas for characters, with the winner voted by Nomad Games’ enthusiastic community.

US-based Graham Zaretsky was the winner of the fiercely-fought competition, with his ideas then brought to life by three artists and gamers supported by SpecialEffect, namely Amandeep Singh Heer, Ben Clark and Gareth Garratt. The three produced sketches and collages to develop the look and feel of The Shaman.

This week Zaretsky, plus Singh Heer, Clark and Garratt will see her brought to life in the game, with The Shaman available to download for £1.49, with revenue raised from the DLC going to SpecialEffect.

In addition, fans of the PC sku will be given the opportunity to choose what they pay for The Shaman character, with Nomad Games hopeful that its loyal community of Talisman fans will raise even more money for SpecialEffect.

“We’re delighted that The Shaman will finally be available for Talisman,” said Don Whiteford, MD of Nomad Games. “She’s a very special character, given that she’s been created jointly by the Talisman community and SpecialEffect.

“We are blown away by the work that SpecialEffect does to support people with disabilities to play games, and we’re honoured to lend our support to them in terms of raising awareness for this very special charity, but also to support them financially via sales of The Shaman.”

SpecialEffect’s Fund Raiser Nick Streeter added: “We can’t thank everyone at Nomad enough for this brilliantly original way of supporting our work, and for their team to involve some of the people we help in the design process was a magnificent gesture.

“All the staff at SpecialEffect are immensely excited about the launch of the Shaman, and the money raised will go straight into helping more people, whatever their physical disability, to benefit from the magic of video games.”

Graham Zaretsky, who won the competition earlier this year, offered: “I’m deeply honoured that The Shaman was selected to help raise money for SpecialEffect. I love the artwork and that it is exactly in the spirit of the character that I imagined. I hope that it helps raise a lot of money and awareness for the charity.”
