Wordsworth Editions releases new edition of Confessions of Saint Augustine

Key Christian text considered to be among the first Western autobiographies written

Book publisher Wordsworth Editions has released a new edition of Confessions of Saint Augustine.

Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430) was an early Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy.

Confessions is his autobiographical work, completed between AD 397-400, and documenting the development of Augustine’s thoughts from childhood into adult life – a life he considered in retrospect to be both sinful and immoral.

Augustine converted to Christianity in his early 30s and was soon ordained as a priest, becoming a bishop not long after.

Confessions was written in 13 parts, each a complete text intended to be read aloud, covering Augustine’s conversion and offering guidance to others taking the same path.

Considered to be among the first Western autobiographies written, Augustine’s work (including the subsequent City of God) became a major influence on Christian writers for the next 1,000 years and remains a much-valued contribution to Christian thinking today.

This new edition of Confessions uses the classic translation from Latin by E.B. Pusey (1838), with a partial modernisation of the text to assist the 21st Century reader.

“Confessions is an important work in terms of both its historical context and the influence it continues to have on modern Christian thinking,” said Wordsworth Editions Director Derek Wright. “This new edition remains faithful to the original text, but is also accessible for newcomers to Augustine’s writings.”

Confessions of Saint Augustine is available now, priced at £3.99 from all major booksellers.
